Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) October 5, 2005

Health organizations around the world are bracing for a possible epidemic that could cost many more lives than last year’s Asian Tsunami and last month’s U.S. hurricanes combined. According to David Nabarro of the U.N. and World Health Organization, a new bird flu epidemic could kill between 5 and 150 million people.

Bird flu, or avian flu, is an influenza virus strain that typically infects birds – including wild birds like ducks and domestic birds like chickens.

There are many forms of bird flu, and most are relatively harmless, producing mild symptoms or even no symptoms. However, several strains of bird flu produce a highly contagious disease that kills quickly and could lead to a massive bird flu epidemic. These dangerous viruses are known as “highly pathogenic avian influenza.” One such bird flu virus is currently spreading among chickens in Asian countries. In recent years it was discovered that the bird flu virus can infect people who have close contact with live birds. It is then possible for the virus to spread from human to human.

Symptoms of bird flu (avian flu) in humans include:

Conjunctivitis

Cough

Fever

Muscle aches

Sore throat

(Severe cases) Breathing problem and pneumonia

Bird flu can be fatal.

How dangerous is bird flu?

There have been a number of small outbreaks of bird flu since 1997, and people who get it appear to have a high mortality rate.

1997 Hong Kong – 18 people were infected and 6 people died. There were two cases and one death in Hong Kong in 2003. As many as 10 deaths have been linked to an outbreak in a number of Asian countries last year. A large scale outbreak, however, could cause millions of deaths around the world.

How can bird flu be treated?

Anyone with bird flu symptoms should see a health care professional immediately. The bird flu virus currently infecting birds in Asia that has caused human illness and death appears to be resistant to Tamiflu, according to officials at Queen Mary Hospital in Australia. Tamiflu is the most common drug used to treat flu in humans.

There currently is no vaccine to protect humans against the strain of bird flu virus that’s been detected in Asia. However, research studies to test a bird flu vaccine to protect humans began in April 2005.

London, UK, (PRWeb UK) October 17, 2009

The imminent arrival of the swine flu vaccine won’t help businesses as most employees won’t take it – according to research conducted by Glasscubes.

The long-awaited H1N1 vaccine has arrived and mass vaccinations are being prepared in the US, the UK and Europe, but will this really help businesses? The key targets to the vaccine programme are pregnant women, the young and the elderly, most of whom do not work; while those who do work are adamantly declaring in blogs, on twitter and in the press that they will not get it done. With the number of cases on a steep rise recently, the pandemic is far from over.

H1N1 is predicted to cost businesses between $ 1.5bn and $ 10bn globally* in lost work days, and the arrival of the vaccine is unlikely to change that. Most swine flu sufferers are requested to stay at home from work or school for up to 5 days, regardless of symptoms, yet many of those affected by the disease would have been capable of working for 2 out of those 5 days. The other issue of course is parents needing to take time off work to stay at home with sick children, leading to even more lost work days.

In order to deal with this problem some larger companies have been able to put home-working options in place to combat the forced time-off, but smaller companies often do not have the necessary cash flow to allow this; sadly they are also far more vulnerable when employees are out of the office as it equates to a greater percentage of their workforce.

A recent report from the UK’s CIPD (Chartered Institue of Personnel and Development) states up to half of the working population could go off sick and they recommend remote working and flexible hours to prevent the spread of infection. Ben Willmott, a senior public policy advisor at the CIPD, explains that this winter could see a major resurgence of the illness.

“There is a real danger that senior management teams ignore the threat to their business posed by a second and more serious wave of swine flu after seeing the first wave subside much more quickly than anticipated,” he said.**

So how do companies go about putting home-working options in place? Wayne Pope, Managing Director of Glasscubes (http://www.glasscubes.com), explains “Most businesses can set their employees up to work remotely easily and cheaply by using online applications, for example Glasscubes allows employees to share documents, calendars, tasks and discussions online securely as well as enabling free conference calls.”

No one really knows where Swine flu is going to take us or how effective (or not) the vaccine might be, but we all know that during an economic recession businesses need to protect themselves as best they can.

*based on average salaries, predicted numbers of cases and number of people employed in Europe and the US

With Healthcare Reform just around the corner and all the new regulations already placed on physicians in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), Capture Billing & Consulting, Inc., a medical billing and practice management company, is helping doctors and medical billers wade thorough and sort out information with its new Medical Billing Minute videos. The one minute long videos will cover a multitude of topics relevant for today’s physicians to help them through the maze of coding, billing and compliance regulations. The first video walks physicians through how to properly bill for the H1N1 Swine Flu Vaccine.

“Physicians, managers and medical billers don’t have a lot of time but need healthcare information,” says Manny Oliverez, Director of Operations of Capture Billing. “We are hoping that via Twitter, Facebook and blogging we can reach healthcare professionals and get them the information they need via a short one to two minute video. That really has not been done before.”

Capture will produce videos to help doctors code and document properly and tell them of governmental regulations that will affect their practice. Some episodes will give tips to medical billers on how to deal with insurance companies that stall or deny coverage for patients and how to overcome the obstacles they put up. The company plans to produce ove 60 Medical Billing Minute videos.

Healthcare professionals can subscribe to the Medical Billing Minute by going to the Capture Billing website or blog, to YouTube.com or finding Capture on Twitter.

Carlsbad, Calif. (PRWEB) November 7, 2006

A large majority of people believe that the flu vaccine should be made available to anyone who wants it, according to a new survey conducted by morefocus, an online research organization.

Eighty-four percent of the more than 2,500 people surveyed said the government should make the flu vaccine available to all citizens who want it, although the survey also revealed that most people think the flu vaccine should be used for those most in need. Sixty-four percent of respondents said that when there is a flu shortage, it’s morally wrong to get a flu shot if you’re not in a “high-risk” group.

Those considered to be high-risk for flu infection range from any child between six months and two years old, to adults 65 years old and older, to health-care workers with direct patient care, among others.

Additionally, 71 percent of those surveyed agreed that it’s important for countries to provide their own flu vaccine instead of relying on other countries to provide it. The survey was conducted after a flu vaccine shortage was experienced in the United States in part because of problems at a British drug manufacturing company that was supplying the vaccine.

An overwhelming majority of people had strong feelings against wholesalers who sell the flu vaccine for up to ten times the normal price, with 92 percent saying that the practice is price-gouging and morally wrong. Additionally, 83 percent believe the government should intervene to stop this practice.

“The research showed some interesting contradictions when it comes to how the government should handle different flu vaccine issues,” said Dr. Regan Carey, morefocus Research Director. “On the one hand, people believe the government shouldn’t decide who does or does not get the vaccine, yet they want the government to get involved when it most directly affects them, when it hits their own wallets.”

The survey also explored people’s opinions about the flu vaccine itself. Seventy-five percent of those surveyed said they do believe that receiving a flu shot can prevent a person from getting the flu infection, yet only 36 percent said they actually received a flu shot that flu season.

When asked why they didn’t receive a flu shot, 33 percent said they were not considered “high-risk,” and almost as many, 29 percent, said they didn’t get a flu shot because they’re healthy and didn’t believe they needed one. Some ten percent of respondents said they think the flu vaccine doesn’t work, while almost as many, eight percent, didn’t have a flu shot because they said it would make them sick. Only four percent said it was because they couldn’t afford it.

“It was interesting to see the number of people who think they don’t need a flu shot, when in reality anyone can get the flu, no matter how healthy they are,” said Dr. Carey. “It’s admirable to let those who are high-risk get a flu shot first, but just because you don’t fit into that category doesn’t mean you don’t need one.”

Temecula, CA (Vocus) June 10, 2009

FFF Enterprises, Inc., the nation’s most trusted distributor of flu vaccine, has launched a first-of-its-kind up to 100% Return Guarantee Offer for 2009-10 seasonal flu vaccine orders. FFF, through its MyFluVaccine program, has introduced this unprecedented offer in its quest to eliminate the risks normally associated with flu vaccine ordering for healthcare providers.

“In these challenging economic times, there is no room for excess or waste,” says Patrick M. Schmidt, chief executive officer, FFF Enterprises, Inc. “This offer is the final step in removing the barriers to preparedness for healthcare providers on the front line who are so essential to winning the battle against flu. By offering a return guarantee on seasonal flu vaccine, we eliminate their worry of ending the flu season with leftover inventory. Now our customers can prepare for a potentially active vaccination season with the confidence of knowing that if their projections are high, they will not suffer an economic impact.”

FFF Enterprises’ MyFluVaccine works in coordination with healthcare providers so that clinics can schedule the exact arrival dates of flu vaccines, solving a universal problem within the flu vaccine marketplace: the uncertainty surrounding vaccine delivery. Historically, healthcare providers could never be certain when their flu vaccine orders would arrive, or even if they would receive the correct product and quantity. These conditions made it very difficult to plan for flu clinics, as providers could not be certain their vaccine would be there when their patients needed it. “We realized that the volatility in the marketplace created unnecessary frustration and risk, so we decided to do something about it,” Schmidt adds.

Certainty in supply and delivery was the first risk that MyFluVaccine addressed. The additional benefit of no pre-payment, a portfolio of products from the top manufacturers, FFF’s guaranteed safe channel and now up to 100% returnable vaccine makes MyFluVaccine a safe, reliable and smart choice for healthcare providers when ordering their flu vaccine.

With the 2009-2010 flu vaccine ordering season already in full swing, healthcare providers are encouraged to place their vaccine orders now. Thanks to the new FFF Enterprises 100% Return Guarantee for Fluvirin®, customers can order their vaccine supply confidently, without the potential financial burden of excess inventory when the season ends. For more information, and to learn about the terms and conditions regarding the return offers available from FFF Enterprises visit http://www.MyFluVaccine.com.

London, UK (PRWEB) May 1, 2009

Replikins, Ltd. has announced that it has produced a synthetic H1N1 swine flu vaccine, Replikins PanFlu™, which is ready for testing worldwide.

The company has developed the vaccine based on the same Replikins peptide technology which provided the surprise advance warning one year ago that the current H1N1 outbreak/pandemic was on its way.

In April 2008, Replikins, Ltd announced the likelihood of H1N1 outbreaks based on the company’s patented Replikin Count™ genomics technology, which examines specific regions in virus genes that have been linked with past epidemics. The company’s chairman, Dr. Samuel Bogoch, found that the regions have been conserved for decades. In H1N1 last year the company detected the highest concentrations of these specific regions ever seen, except for those from the 1918 flu pandemic which killed tens of millions of people. To date, no other method has been able to predict whether and what strain of a given organism will threaten a human or animal population.

The company is producing the new product after achieving test results against two previous viral outbreaks: the lethal Taura virus with shrimp populations and the avian flu (H5N1) with chicken populations. The company’s closely related Replikins vaccine against avian flu, produced in a 7 day period, was recently tested at the University of Georgia and shown to block H5N1 virus entry, replication, and excretion in chickens (paper submitted for publication).

Gaihersburg, Md. (PRWEB) September 22, 2007

MedImmune, Inc. today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the expanded use of FluMist(R) (Influenza Virus Vaccine Live, Intranasal) in children two to five years of age. FluMist is now approved for active immunization for the prevention of disease caused by influenza A and B viruses in individuals two to 49 years of age. Only one manufacturer had previously been licensed in the United States to produce influenza vaccine, in the form of a flu shot, for children under four years of age.

MedImmune anticipates shipping FluMist with the expanded label to health care providers in the coming days so that vaccinations may be offered to eligible individuals ahead of and throughout the upcoming influenza season.

“As a company dedicated to innovative advancements in pediatric medicine, MedImmune is delighted to be able to offer FluMist as an option for children as young as two years old to help protect them from influenza,” said James F. Young, Ph.D., president, research and development. “With the new, refrigerated formulation approved in January, the results from our head-to- head study published in the February issue of The New England Journal of Medicine, and the expanded age indication now within the label, it is an exciting time for FluMist.”

In a pivotal study that included more than 4,000 children between the ages of two and five years of age during the 2004-2005 influenza season, there was a 54 percent reduction in cases of flu and flu symptoms in children who received FluMist compared with those who received the traditional flu shot (4.5 percent vs. 9.8 percent, respectively).(1) In the study, FluMist demonstrated a reduction in influenza rates compared to the inactivated vaccine against strains that were both matched and mismatched to the vaccine.

In 48 completed clinical trials, more than 48,000 subjects ranging in age from six weeks to more than 90 years of age received FluMist. In addition to the clinical trial experience, approximately 60,000 doses of FluMist have been administered in two post-marketing studies, and approximately seven million doses of FluMist have been distributed for use in individuals five to 49 years of age following licensure of the product in 2003 through the 2006-2007 influenza season. FluMist is different from the flu shot in that it uses live, attenuated – or weakened – viruses within the vaccine to help stimulate an immune response that is designed to closely resemble the body’s natural response to an influenza infection.

“The FDA approval of FluMist for young children is important because these young kids have very high attack rates for influenza, often require medical evaluation for their influenza illness, and can spread influenza easily to others,” said Pedro Piedra, M.D., professor, Department of Molecular Virology and Microbiology, and Pediatrics, Baylor College of Medicine. “Also, the live attenuated influenza vaccine is quite effective in helping prevent influenza and is generally very acceptable to children and their parents since it is administered by nasal spray rather than a shot.”

Influenza’s Impact on Young Children

The flu is most prevalent in school-age children, as the virus travels easily from person to person and because children in this age group spend a large part of their day in close contact with other children. Children two to 17 years of age are twice as likely to get influenza than adults, including the elderly.(2) During a widespread outbreak, the rate of flu infections can exceed 30 percent in school-age children. Each year, up to 60 million Americans get the flu, according the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Resulting complications cause more than 200,000 hospitalizations and approximately 36,000 deaths in the U.S. annually.

Protection Against Matched and Mismatched Strains of Flu

FluMist has demonstrated in clinical trials that it helps provide protection against flu strains both matched and mismatched to those used in the vaccine. Mismatched strains are circulating strains that are different from those included in manufacturing the season’s flu vaccines. According to CDC data, vaccine mismatch has occurred to varying degrees in five of the last 11 flu seasons, most recently during the 2005-2006 season.

About FluMist

FluMist is a live attenuated influenza virus vaccine indicated for active immunization of individuals two to 49 years of age against influenza disease caused by influenza virus subtypes A and type B contained in the vaccine.

FluMist is contraindicated in individuals with history of hypersensitivity to eggs, egg proteins, gentamicin, gelatin or arginine or with life- threatening reactions to previous influenza vaccinations, and in children and adolescents receiving concomitant aspirin or aspirin-containing therapy.

Do not administer FluMist to children less than two years of age due to an increased risk of hospitalization and wheezing that was observed in clinical trials. FluMist should not be administered to any individual with asthma and to children less than five years of age with recurrent wheezing unless the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk. Do not administer FluMist to individuals with severe asthma or active wheezing.

If Guillain-Barre syndrome has occurred with prior influenza vaccination or if an individual is immunocompromised, the decision to give FluMist should be based on careful consideration of the potential benefits and risks. FluMist should not be administered to individuals with underlying medical conditions predisposing them to wild-type influenza infection complications unless the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk. FluMist should be given to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed.

Most common adverse reactions (occurring in 10 percent or more of individuals receiving FluMist and at a rate at least five percent higher than in those receiving placebo) are runny nose or nasal congestion in recipients of all ages, fever more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit in children two to six years of age, and sore throat in adults.

FluMist may not protect all individuals receiving the vaccine. FluMist is for intranasal administration only.

New Port Richey, FL (PRWEB) September 27, 2009

Gulf View Walk In Clinic announces the arrival of seasonal flu shot for the year 2009-2010. The best time to take the Flu shot is in September or October. But then there is a saying “Better Late than Never”. You can get vaccinated up to the end of December. The flu usually runs from October to February.

We know that this year we are in uncharted territory. Federal Health Officials say there is plenty of vaccine for seasonal influenza this year. Each year 5% to 20% of the population gets seasonal flu, about 200,000 are hospitalized with flu-related complications, and 36,000 die.

Gulf View Walk In Clinic has two offices; one in New Port Richey on state road 54 (Tel. 727-844-5555) and the other in Spring HIll on County Line Road (352-666-5555). No appointment is required and people can just walk in. Gulf View gives anywhere 2000 to 5000 Flu shots every year at two of its offices.

The Flu vaccine is covered by Medicare and other patients pay $ 30 for the shot. Some insurances reimburse the patients. It is strongly advised to get vaccinated when you are healthy. You can not get vaccine if you are sick.

Pneumonia vaccine is also available that is recommended for age 65 and older or at risk patients every ten years.

Every body is waiting anxiously for Swine Flu H1N1 Vaccine that is being released in the middle of next month. Gulf View has requested 15,000 doses for Swine Flu vaccination that is being distributed through Health Department free of cost, only administration fee of $ 22.70 will be charged to Non-Medicare patients. The offices will hire extra temporary help and vaccinate people seven days, extended hours if needed.

Arlington Heights, IL (PRWEB) July 30, 2009

The nation’s allergists are urging asthma patients to get a swine (H1N1) flu shot in addition to a seasonal flu shot this fall to protect themselves against both types of the influenza following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Vaccine Advisory Committee recommendations July 29 that identified people with asthma as one of the high-priority groups to receive the H1N1 flu vaccine.

The American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) and its member allergists, who are experts in diagnosing and treating asthma, warn that those with asthma who contract the flu (either H1N1 or seasonal) can have a more severe case and take longer to recover. When the H1N1 vaccine becomes available, the ACAAI recommends the 22 million Americans with asthma get that shot in addition to a seasonal flu shot. To date, patients with asthma represented about one in three of the hospitalizations due to the H1N1 virus.

Each year, flu-related complications in the United States are responsible for more than 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths. In June 2009, the World Health Organization declared the swine flu a pandemic due to the spread of the virus which has resulted in an estimated 43,000 reported cases in the United States including 302 deaths. The CDC estimates that these reported cases are just the tip of the iceberg and that there have been a least a million cases of the H1N1 virus since June of this year.

“While everyone needs to be aware of the symptoms of the new H1N1 virus, patients with chronic health problems like asthma need to be especially concerned if they develop respiratory symptoms,” said Richard Gower, M.D., president of the ACAAI. “If you have asthma and experience symptoms such as fever, headache, fatigue, sore throat, dry cough, nasal congestion and body aches, call your doctor immediately to determine if treatment is needed. If symptoms are caught early, antiviral drugs can be used to combat the virus and help prevent complications.”

Asthma patients also will still need to get a separate vaccine for the seasonal flu this fall. A recent report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that adults with asthma, particularly younger adults, are being vaccinated against the flu at levels well below national goals.
