Cork, Ireland (PRWEB) July 31, 2009

A Cork based health and safety company has been enlisted to assist a global software company to prepare their Ireland operation for the effects of pandemic swine flu.

The lessons learned from other sites infected early in the pandemic spread timeframe are actively being applied the software giant’s sites across the globe. The number of confirmed cases of influenza A(H1N1) in Ireland has risen to the point that the authorities have switched to a treatment rather than a prevention phase. The concern is that with no natural immunity to the new strain, as with seasonal flu, it is likely that infection could easily spread through a geographical area or population. Of even greater concern is the knowledge from historical outbreaks that the virus could even mutate into a more serious strain in the future where it could become responsible for a much greater death toll.

Pandemic infection will almost certainly have significant impact on business productivity, as the best way to contain disease is to keep all infected or potentially infected people away from gathering places such as the workplace. All businesses must begin to prepare for the impact of this disease on their workforce and business operations i.e.

Operating with considerably reduced staff numbers

Reduced supply of raw materials

Travel restrictions

Darren O’Keeffe, Consultancy Manager of CMSE, said that the risk to companies not adequately planning could be very high. “Employers are very focused on economic issues, losing key suppliers, or key staff could devastate a business.”

All companies must there for plan, resource, audit and review pandemic preparedness procedures on an ongoing basis to be in good shape for the expected rise in cases in the European Autumn timeframe.

CMSE can assist any type of organisation to prepare in a comprehensive and professional manner to mitigate the effects of a pandemic virus that will impact on all businesses and locations in the near future. Whether by auditing locations, or the development of plans and procedures, CMSE can help to reduce the impact of Swine Flu and ensure essential business continuity through effective planning and preparedness.

Plymouth, MI (PRWEB) December 3, 2009

It still blazes across news channels, web sites and magazine covers day after day — dire statistics and dozens of stories about the spread of H1N1 influenza A (swine flu) . Reports of vaccine shortages and long lines for clinics paint a discouraging picture during this pandemic.

But finally, there is some good news.

Pure-Go® is a revolutionary device that allows people to sanitize their hands anytime, anywhere. Worn on the wrist, the Pure-Go® is a refillable silicone device that can be filled with any alcohol-based hand sanitizer solution.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advocates education and hand hygiene as keys to success in fighting germs, including the current flu epidemic.

“One of the very first lines of defense to stave off illness and bacteria-related infections is simple hand hygiene,” says Jeff Powers, creator of Pure-Go®. “Everyone should exercise caution in this emergency situation, it’s a scenario that requires personal responsibility. We’ve created a tool to help make it simple to clean your hands in a discrete and convenient manner. It gives the wearer peace of mind.”

Pure-Go® isn’t just a flu fighter. It’s perfect for parents and children, teachers, tourists, business travelers and health care workers—anyone who wants to protect themselves against infections on a daily basis, even when soap and water isn’t readily available.

The Pure-Go® Wrist Worn Hand Sanitizer Kit includes: the Pure-Go® dispenser, a 2 oz. bottle of hand sanitizer and a refill nozzle. It can be refilled with any standard brand of hand sanitizer and takes just seconds to fill. The ability to refill and reuse the product again and again truly separates the Pure-Go® from other portable solutions. The Pure-Go is available in several standard colors.

“Influenza A viruses, such as swine flu, as well as many others, are fragile and can be easily destroyed through proper hygiene, including use of soap and water and alcohol-based hand sanitizers,” says Dr. Judy Daly, director of the Clinical Microbiology Laboratories, Primary Children’s Medical Center, Salt Lake City. The Pure-Go® puts that ability right at your fingertips.

“The bottom line is that individuals have a great deal of personal control over their health,” explains Powers. “Excellent hand hygiene can keep you healthy, and educational information about the effectiveness of hand sanitizer is readily available from various health organizations. Keep your hands out of your mouth and eyes, and clean them regularly. It’s a simple message that can go a long way toward curbing the spread of germs, including H1N1.”

For more information on how to defend yourself against swine flu and other infections by wearing your hand sanitizer on you wrist with a Pure-Go®, please call 877-696-7484 or visit http://www.purgo-creations.com.

Bishop’s Stortford, Herts (PRWEB) May 21, 2009

Displaysense has announced that, with the number of swine flu cases continuing to rise across the UK, retailers and manufacturers are now going to extreme lengths to prevent the spread of the highly contagious illness throughout their customers and staff.

Demand for swine flu protection equipment has gone through the roof over the past few weeks, with Displaysense, a Hertfordshire based shop fittings (http://www.displaysense.co.uk/Retail-Displays-and-Shopfittings?utm_source=internal&utm_medium=PR&utm_campaign=swineflu ) provider, reporting that sales of their face masks and antibacterial hand wash have more than trebled and stock of the items is having to be ordered daily to keep up with demand. Not only has the retail display company seen a dramatic increase in sales of their face masks, but the range of searches on the company’s website for swine flu preventive products has gone up ten-fold, overtaking the more popular searches for products such as business card holders (http://www.displaysense.co.uk/Business-Card-Holders?utm_source=internal&utm_medium=PR&utm_campaign=swineflu ).

Steve Whittle, marketing manager at Displaysense, commented on the findings by saying, “We have had a big increase in demand for a lot of our products, from small clothing manufacturers purchasing a large quantity of masks to protect their work force, to retail stores purchasing antibacterial wipes and disinfectant hand gel to encourage customer and staff usage as well as keeping work surfaces sterile.”

Not only has the sale of face masks rocketed, but the sale of storage devices related to the virus has also been on the up, with products such as medical display cases (http://www.displaysense.co.uk/Display-Cases-and-Cabinets?utm_source=internal&utm_medium=PR&utm_campaign=Swineflu ) and leaflet holders (http://www.displaysense.co.uk/Literature-and-Information-Display?utm_source=internal&utm_medium=PR&utm_campaign=swineflu ) seeing an equally as large increase in sales.

“With the economy as it is, the fear of what swine flu can do to a struggling high street workforce and the potential reduction of footfalls of consumers, has many retailers reeling,” continued Steve Whittle. “We are just glad that we can supply such products to help these businesses combat this potential threat.”

The government are tackling the outbreak head on by distributing a leaflet to homes across the country this May, informing people of the symptoms and actions to take to prevent contracting and passing on the illness. Displaysense are also playing their part, by creating a dedicated page on their site that not only provides information on swine flu related products, but also provides links through to the government’s advice website and a health protection agency website.

London, UK, (PRWeb UK) October 17, 2009

The imminent arrival of the swine flu vaccine won’t help businesses as most employees won’t take it – according to research conducted by Glasscubes.

The long-awaited H1N1 vaccine has arrived and mass vaccinations are being prepared in the US, the UK and Europe, but will this really help businesses? The key targets to the vaccine programme are pregnant women, the young and the elderly, most of whom do not work; while those who do work are adamantly declaring in blogs, on twitter and in the press that they will not get it done. With the number of cases on a steep rise recently, the pandemic is far from over.

H1N1 is predicted to cost businesses between $ 1.5bn and $ 10bn globally* in lost work days, and the arrival of the vaccine is unlikely to change that. Most swine flu sufferers are requested to stay at home from work or school for up to 5 days, regardless of symptoms, yet many of those affected by the disease would have been capable of working for 2 out of those 5 days. The other issue of course is parents needing to take time off work to stay at home with sick children, leading to even more lost work days.

In order to deal with this problem some larger companies have been able to put home-working options in place to combat the forced time-off, but smaller companies often do not have the necessary cash flow to allow this; sadly they are also far more vulnerable when employees are out of the office as it equates to a greater percentage of their workforce.

A recent report from the UK’s CIPD (Chartered Institue of Personnel and Development) states up to half of the working population could go off sick and they recommend remote working and flexible hours to prevent the spread of infection. Ben Willmott, a senior public policy advisor at the CIPD, explains that this winter could see a major resurgence of the illness.

“There is a real danger that senior management teams ignore the threat to their business posed by a second and more serious wave of swine flu after seeing the first wave subside much more quickly than anticipated,” he said.**

So how do companies go about putting home-working options in place? Wayne Pope, Managing Director of Glasscubes (http://www.glasscubes.com), explains “Most businesses can set their employees up to work remotely easily and cheaply by using online applications, for example Glasscubes allows employees to share documents, calendars, tasks and discussions online securely as well as enabling free conference calls.”

No one really knows where Swine flu is going to take us or how effective (or not) the vaccine might be, but we all know that during an economic recession businesses need to protect themselves as best they can.

*based on average salaries, predicted numbers of cases and number of people employed in Europe and the US

Orangeburg, NY (PRWEB) June 17, 2009

In response to the growing numbers of confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza A virus infection across the globe, the World Health Organization (WHO) recently declared a pandemic, the first global epidemic in 41 years. Professional Disposables International, Inc. (PDI), (http://www.pdipdi.com) a leader in infection prevention in healthcare settings, issued a reminder about the importance of hand hygiene as an effective way to stem the spread of disease.

“We are closely monitoring the latest updates from both the CDC, as well as the World Health Organization, to ensure the public is provided with the most up-to-date information available,” said Zachary T. Julius, CEO, PDI. “According to the CDC, hand hygiene remains the first step in infection prevention and it is a step each one of us can take.” H1N1 flu is highly contagious and can easily be transmitted before a person shows symptoms.

Infection Prevention Recommendations

Proper hand hygiene is the single most important means for preventing the spread of infection in schools, offices and healthcare facilities. Frequently wash hands with soap and water for 15-20 seconds. When soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based disposable hand wipes or gel sanitizers.

In healthcare settings, disinfecting hard surfaces is also critical to preventing the spread of infection between patients and healthcare workers. Avoid touching community surfaces where the virus can live for up to 2-8 hours outside the body.

Additional Resources Available for Healthcare Facilities

PDI maintains a complete portfolio of infection prevention solutions to meet the ever evolving clinical needs of the healthcare industry. The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) most recent guidance for the use of antimicrobial products registered for use against influenza A viruses on hard surfaces states that any EPA accepted product with an efficacy claim against influenza A virus is also effective against H1N1 influenza virus. All three PDI Sani-Cloth® disinfecting products have claims against influenza A virus. (Please see information below regarding new EPA guidelines.)

In addition to providing efficacious disinfectants and hand hygiene products, PDI has released new protocols for both environmental surface disinfection and hand hygiene to reflect the latest guidance from the CDC and WHO.

“PDI is ready to assist our customers in responding to this growing public health threat by providing infection prevention resources, such as product usage templates updated with the latest guidance from the CDC and WHO, as well as consultations with one of our infection preventionists”, said J. Hudson Garrett Jr., Ph.D., Director of Clinical Affairs.

For additional specific guidance on infection prevention strategies specific to H1N1 influenza, please visit the CDC’s dedicated resource page at http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/ or the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology resource page at http://www.apic.org.

For more than 30 years, PDI has pioneered the development, testing, manufacturing and marketing of pre-moistened wipes as the optimum delivery system for skin antisepsis, hand hygiene, patient and surface care. With trusted brands including Sani-Cloth®, Sani-Hands® ALC, Sani-Hands® for Kids, Hygea® and Chlorascrub™, PDI serves the healthcare market through hospitals, physician and dental offices, emergency medical services, long-term care, schools and a variety of other healthcare facilities. Professional Disposables International, Inc. is headquartered in Orangeburg, New York. For more information, visit http://www.pdipdi.com.

London, UK (PRWEB) May 3, 2009

Uncertainty and fear have been jamming the enquiry lines of Burgesses Ltd and other insurance brokers and companies up and down the country this week, following the sporadic outbursts of Swine Flu, influenza variant strain H1N1, associated with travellers returning home after vacation in Mexico.

Unlike the questions regarding travel insurance which have been covered extensively in the national press, it appears the UK public are more concerned about their individual personal covers, should Swine Flu become pandemic.

Hayden Powers, Customer Services Manager at Burgesses Ltd, the UK’s largest online supplier of independent income protection insurance and mortgage protection insurance for Sickness and ASU products http://www.burgesses.com explained,

“The majority of sickness insurance protection products sold by online independent providers such as ourselves in the UK, cover Flu and it’s associated sickness, and we can assure all our clients and direct customers that they are covered ‘back to day one’ of a period of sickness caused by swine flu.

It is important that a sickness insurance policy includes the back to day one cover, as most income insurance and mortgage payment protection policies for sickness have a thirty day excess period before you can claim. If your swine flu sickness period only lasts three weeks and you have a thirty day excess period with no back to day one of your sickness cover, then you will not be able to claim.”

Other UK Insurance companies are also bracing themselves for claims.

Robin Ranks of UK Commercial Ltd http://www.uk-commercial-insurance.com the online UK commercial insurance broker network, confirms that many small business owners are very concerned about the effects of swine flu on their business.

He said,

“They are concerned about the interruption to their business that widespread Swine Flu might bring. We have had enquiries as diverse as from freight forwarder customers that do business in Mexico with imported goods, through to clients who have Keyman Insurance who are concerned about business continuity if these key players fall victim to the flu. However most enquiries have been from small businessmen concerned about additional pressures on their already struggling businesses that swine flu might bring, in particular business insurance coverage under the contingency sections of business interruption.

A major problem will arise if companies are forced to close due to a swine flu pandemic, and the nature of the risk becomes fundamental. In this scenario the UK Government will have to step in to rescue falling businesses.”

Dave Healey underwriting expert at online specialist car insurance comparison site http://www.car-insurance.tv warns of the dangers of driving with flu.

He said,

“We are warning our clients against driving if they are suffering the effects of flu or on medication prescribed due to having contracted swine flu. Aside from any legal obligations, persons doing so are at a much higher risk of having an accident”

Laredo, TX and Austin, TX (PRWEB) August 26, 2009

The City of Laredo Health Department (CLHD) and the Laredo Independent School District (LISD) are installing a “first-in-the nation,” Internet-based system for early identification of possible novel Influenza H1N1 virus infection of students, teachers and staff. The virus is commonly known as the “swine flu.”

The system, known as Argus1, also provides decision support for school nurses and other providers in caring for sick students; instant alerts such as vaccine recommendations, and continuous reporting and tracking of outbreaks to the CLHD and school authorities.

“In addition to Influenza A H1N1, the system also provides point-of-contact surveillance for other forms of influenza as well as the potential to track other public health infectious diseases and chemical agents that the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security has identified as possible agents in a biological or chemical terrorist attack,” said Robert Burns, Director of Information Technology for Argus One Systems, Inc.

Argus1 was introduced in Laredo as part of a test site from 2003 to 2006. Its re-deployment for the 2009-10 school year is based on extensive testing and refinement of the system, with particular attention to the new Influenza A H1N1 virus. Argus1 also can be used by physician offices, emergency medical responders and hospital emergency departments, Burns noted.

Patricia Keck, Director of LISD Health Services, stated:

“Argus 1 will be an important part of our ‘Fight the Flu’ program. By quickly receiving reports from school nurses, LISD Health Services Department in conjunction with the City of Laredo is able to track illness patterns. If an illness pattern develops at an LISD school, we will provide the school with intensified flu prevention recommendations. Argus1 is a valuable weapon in fighting flu outbreaks.”

“In addition to assisting nurses caring for sick students, Argus1 provides a distinctive reporting function to the CLHD, which has played a key role in the design and development of the system during the past six years,” said Vincent Friedewald, MD, Medical Director of Argus One Systems.

“This surveillance system is an important adjunct to track and monitor disease from the onset at the provider level and to quickly report to the CLHD for a rapid response intervention to contain disease,” said Hector Gonzalez, MD, MPH, Director of the city’s Health Dept.

“The system is secured and uses both landline and wireless Internet-connected computers,” explained Friedewald, a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center – Houston.

Argus1 assesses signs, symptoms, test results

“An important part of the program involves assessment of patients’ signs, symptoms and test results, which are instantly transformed into a comprehensive list of possible disease causes and detailed information about each of the diseases,” he added.

Additionally, when a person’s symptoms match any of nine categories of public health syndromes, including influenza-like illnesses, the exact time and location is reported to both the CLHD and to the central office of the School District, he said. All reported cases are instantly displayed on a map of the City of Laredo so that potential cases are immediately tracked to help officials decide how to prevent its spread throughout the schools and the community at large.

“As the school year begins, we are entering a potentially very dangerous period with a new influenza virus that particularly affects young persons,” emphasized Friedewald, who is an Associate Editor for The American Journal of Cardiology, as well as a research professor in the College of Science at the University of Notre Dame

“Our ability to build on our existing relationship with the LISD and the CLHD should afford the children, as well as the entire community of Laredo, a proven and unsurpassed level of added protection” he said.

Reed Seminars has released an Instant Impact Webinar on Putting Preparations in Place in Case the Swine Flu (H1N1 Flu) Impacts Your Employees (http://reedseminars.com/details.asp?id=302). The 60-minute webinar was conducted by J. Mark Waxman and Mark Neuberger of Foley & Lardner LLP on May 1st and is now available for download. The webinar contains critical information for CEOs and HR Managers on important topics such as preventative measures, preparing a “what-if” plan regarding business continuity, legal issues regarding what you can and cannot do, and creating a response team in case the need arrives.

According to Jonathan Reed Aspatore, CEO of Reed Seminars, “This is an unfortunate topic affecting the world right now. CEOs, HR Managers and executives need to be prepared in case someone at their company is infected. We hope this resource will help them do this in a more proactive manner, instead of being forced to make rush decisions if and when there is an outbreak amongst their workforce.”

The webinar features a PowerPoint with audio narration and also includes a separate blank PowerPoint executives can use to create their own response plan. For additional information on this webinar or Reed Seminars, please visit http://reedseminars.com/details.asp?id=302.

Asheville, NC (PRWEB) May 12, 2009

The World Health Organization (WHO) said that 21 countries have reported 1085 cases of “swine flu” and that the US had 268 cases in 36 of the nation’s states. WHO and US President Barack Obama urged vigilance and said that the key is to be prepared to address any outcome.

“Swine flu” (Type A influenza – H1N1) is a strain of Type A influenza that is usually spread from human to human. This new outbreak of “swine flu” is transmitted from one person to another by coughing, sneezing or by touch. Ordinarily, the very young (especially children under five) and the very old are most susceptible to influenza but this virus seems to be prevalent in all ages.

Leading U.S. pediatrician Dr Olson Huff of Sixty Second Parent said that parents should follow four simple tips to help prevention, especially for young children and babies.

“By adhering to sensible precautions and following medical advice, it’s likely your child will avoid this outbreak or not be severely affected by it,” Dr. Huff said.

1. Keep your family away from people who have flu symptoms.

2. Teach your child not to cough or sneeze into hands. Cover sneezes and coughs with sleeve, elbow or preferably tissues. Discard tissues immediately after use. If your child is sick have the tissues nearby, along with a trash bag.

3. Keep children home from school and daycare.

4. Careful and frequent hand washing – teach your children to wash with soap and water for

20 seconds. Keep antibacterial wipes or gel on hand for times when you do not have access to soap and water.

Dr Huff suggests a practical tip to encourage children to wash their hands thoroughly and to make hand washing fun for children is the use of song and games. Click here for other practical tips on child health and development.

“Songs that last around 20 seconds are optimal hand washing time such as ‘Happy Birthday to You’, ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ and ‘If You’re Happy and You Know it Wash Your Hands’ to encourage toddlers play games like Round and Round the Garden using soap,” Dr Huff said.

A person may spread this virus to others as long as symptoms are present. The severity of the illness varies from very mild to those who become quite ill. Death can occur.

Symptoms are what one ordinarily would expect, including fever, cough, sore throat, aching, headache, chills and possibly a rash.

Dr Huff said that treatment is available, although the vaccine to prevent this strain of virus has not yet been developed but is to be made available as soon as possible.

“Medications called anti-viral drugs are available and can be quite effective. They are available by prescription only so at the first sign of any of the symptoms mentioned, medical help should be sought.”

Dr Huff recommends that parents should encourage a sick child to rest, give fluids and keep the tissues handy. To treat pain and fever use medications recommended by your doctor – do not give children aspirin.

“Remember, use sensible precautions, wash hands, cover coughs and sneezes, try to avoid sick persons and don’t alarm children or others by being too fearful. Follow medical advice and the likelihood is that you and your children will avoid this outbreak or not be severely afflicted by it,” Dr Huff said.
