(PRWEB) January 3, 2005

A Flu vaccine shortage has been in the news for some time now. If you are one of the millions of Americans not among the “high risk” population receiving the flu vaccine or finding yourself without medical insurance TensionHeadacheMedication.com offers an alternative.

If taken within 48 hours of the onset of flu symptoms Tamiflu attacks the flu virus and stops it from spreading inside the body. Tamiflu is also used to reduce the chance of getting the flu in people age 13 and older who have a higher chance of getting the flu because they spend time with someone who has the flu. Tamiflu can also reduce the chance of getting the flu if there is a flu outbreak in the community.

Visit Tamiflu.com for more information on Tamiflu and for information on how to differentiate between the symptoms of the flu and a cold. The website also offers a desktop “Flu Tracker”.

Amoxicillin and Zithromax Z-Paks are commonly prescribed bacterial infection prescription drugs. These bacterial antibiotics are not useful against viral infections such as the flu. The onset of flu symptoms can, at times, leave one susceptible to bacterial infections if one is prone to them. These include upper respiratory, ear or throat infections.

(PRWEB) December 4, 2005

Cold and Flu defense can be simple, natural and healthy according to prominent Australian health writer Andrew Cavanagh.

He says the simplest, most effective, proven cold and flu defense is hygiene – more specifically paying special attention to the way you wash your hands and other neglected but simple natural hygiene therapies like nasal irrigation.

Cavanagh says most people think viruses fly through the air then into your nose or mouth. If that were true, he says, then the best cold and flu defense would be vitamin C and anti-viral drugs.

But viruses like the cold and flu don’t fly – they hitchhike.

You usually pick up droplets of a cold or flu virus from hand to hand contact or from objects like doorknobs, telephones or tables. Extensive research reveals over 90% of cold and flu viruses enter your body when you touch your eyes or your nose with your fingernails.

So Cavanagh says cold and flu defense rule number one is don’t touch your face with your hands.

Your fingernails carry more viruses like the cold and flu than any other part of your body. The skin under your fingernails lack the horny layer that protects other skin on your body. Combine this with the actual nail and you create a safe, warm place for cold and flu viruses and bacteria to survive.

Washing your fingernails regularly is crucial as a first line of cold and flu defense. Regular, effective hand washing helps reduce your chance of inoculating yourself with a cold or flu virus and helps you avoid passing a cold or flu virus on to someone you know through hand to hand contact.

So Cavanagh’s cold and flu virus defense rule number two – wash your hands regularly and pay special attention to washing your fingernails.

But Cavanagh warns that using hand washing as an effective first line of cold and flu defense can be more complicated than it seems on the surface.

You need to use the right kind of soap and you can make several potentially dangerous mistakes when you wash your hands.

Also washing your hands is just the beginning.

Other therapies like nasal irrigation are vital if you want natural, powerful cold and flu defense.

Cold and Flu: Symptoms Treatment and Remedies

Cold and Flu – millions of people around the world suffer from one of the two ailments. These are among the most common ailments frequently experienced during winter season. A large number of people infected thus often seek treatment for cold and flu in greater volumes while the winter season lasts. Surprising as it may seem, cold and flu are our body’s reaction to cleanse itself of the invading germs. The mucus production in our nose works as a germ flushing agent. And so does the productive cough which should similarly be expelled. Coughing and sneezing help in getting the mucus out of our body. On the same lines, flu – commonly known as influenza, causes fever whereby we perspire and the body rids itself of toxins. Both these diseases are viral and infectious in nature i.e. they spread through virus and can spread through contact with those suffer from these diseases. But the similarity ends here.

The symptoms of cold and flu are totally different in nature. Rhino viruses and Corona viruses are held responsible for causing the common cold whereas flu is caused by the influenza virus. The common cold develops gradually with unpleasant symptoms like a running nose, a sore throat, watery eyes, irritation in the nose and throat, or even a blocked nose. These symptoms cause only minor hindrance to our daily activities but do not necessarily stop us from performing daily tasks. The affects of flu symptoms are sudden and more severe unlike those of the common cold. They can interfere with our daily activities to a greater extent and prove debilitating. We can possibly get bed ridden for a couple of days during a flu attack. Nausea, muscle pain, cold chills, and vomiting are all symptoms of flu. The symptoms of cold and flu gain prominence during the winter season. The exact reason behind why these diseases infect on a greater number of people during winters is still not clear. But researchers point out the close proximity to infected persons while spending more time indoors during winters as possible causes of cold and flu. Staying indoors creates an absence of many physical activities which further weakens our resistance to these viruses. Over the counter medicines and home remedies for cold and flu is often the first line of defense in such cases. While vaccines do exist for flu, there is none available for the common cold. Medications do not cure but only attempt to give relief from the common cold while our body is fighting off the cold virus. As cold and flu are infectious by nature, prevention is of prime importance.

Prevention can be attained through habits like washing hands with water and soap often, and avoiding contact of hands with the face whenever possible. As germs can be present in cleaner places we cannot visually detect, we should also work towards strengthening our immune system with nutritional supplement intake and exercise. Natural remedies for cold and flu promote a nutritional diet including vegetables, fresh fruits, honey, salads, honey, fresh juice and whole grain cereals. Taking garlic in appropriate measures is known to help in alleviating the effects of cold and flu. Natural remedies for cold and flu not only help in bolstering the immune system towards tackling cold and flu but are also free of undesirable side effects. One should also get enough sleep and take regular outdoor exercises along with other healthy activities to revitalize the immune system. Maintaining this regime not only acts as a treatment of cold and flu but also helps in gaining overall health.

Having suffered long with the ailment, it’s a feel good factor to advice about making health easy and life relaxing. Find more about the diseases instead of going for risky surgery & medications side effects.

Personal Best®, a leader in employee wellness solutions, announces the release of a Flu Prevention Starter Kit as the United States prepares for what is projected to be a severe cold and flu season.

As concerns mount, businesses and physicians should prepare to educate themselves and their employees or patients on who’s at risk, self-care prevention, the coming vaccine, possible side effects, and potential partial immunity. Personal Best’s Flu Prevention Starter Kit is an informational resource promoting prevention and self-care guidelines.

“A widespread outbreak of illness — whether seasonal flu, swine flu or another infection — has the potential to cause disruptions in the workplace, schools and in essential services. That’s why we’re pleased to introduce the Flu Prevention Starter Kit which will help educate and encourage preventative behavior,” said Senior Vice President and Publisher for Personal Best, Charles Dismuke.

The Flu Prevention Starter Kit includes: 50 educational brochures that provide self-care tips; a 6-poster set series that reinforces preventative behavior such as proper hand washing techniques and provides tips on recognizing cold and flu symptoms as well as vaccination recommendations from the CDC; a Swine Flu Preparedness checklist; and a free bonus audio CD titled Swine Flu & Other Pandemic Events that helps prepare organizational leaders on protecting their employees and businesses. To learn more and review the components of the kit, go to: Personal Best’s Flu Prevention Starter Kit.

With flu season underway, the award winning Chinese Herbal Pharmacologist, Doctor Lihua Zhang (www.herbal-max.com), announces the availability of an effective, maximum strength herbal product to combat Flu and Cough. It is appropriately called HERBALmax™ Flu, Cold & Cough formula. The herbs used in the formula have been carefully selected from tens of thousands of Chinese herbs for their safety; the formula can be taken by all ages. Some herbs in the formula were used to stop the SARS outbreak in late 2002 and early 2003 in China. Most importantly, your cough usually can be stopped as soon as 1-4 days after you take the formula.

The success of the formula is due to two factors:

1) Dr. Zhang’s extensive knowledge and formulation of the product backed by 23 years of herbal research and clinical experience; and

2) The use of concentrates of Chinese herbs known for their effective antibacterial and antiviral properties.

HERBALmax™ Flu, Cold & Cough formula has been shown in clinical studies to significantly shorten the duration of flu and cough. From September 2002 to April 2003, a series of 83 patients reporting symptoms of flu and cough were studied. Results showed that the Flu, Cold & Cough formula appeared to aid recovery from flu and cough symptoms, typically within 1 to 4 days.

Influenza (the flu) is characterized by the abrupt onset of upper respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough, headache, body aches and various nasal symptoms. The fever typically lasts three to five days, but it can persist up to a week or more, and cough is often the last symptom remaining at the end of the acute illness. Sometimes, a post-viral cough may persist for up to eight weeks. Influenza is also known to be a deadly disease that can disguise itself in variety of different forms. Flu and its complications commonly known as bronchitis and pneumonia was the seventh leading cause of death in the USA in 1999 and 2000. The flu and cough are respiratory illnesses caused by different viruses with similar symptoms. People 65+ years and children 6-23 months of age, pregnant women, and people with chronic medical conditions are at high risk of complications from influenza.

Antibiotics treat bacteria and are usually not effective for treating viruses like influenza and its accompanying cough. Some of the drugs available for flu only treats certain viruses, and each flu is caused by different viruses. One such drug, Tamiflu (oseltamivir), can only be taken within 2 days of first signs of symptoms. It cannot be taken by infants less than one year old and may cause side effects. Recently, The Lancet, a British medical journal, published a study of children with influenza treated with oseltamivir. The research, conducted by an international team of researchers, showed that nearly 20% of patients treated with the drug produced mutant drug-resistant viruses as soon as four days after treatment.

Because HERBALmax™ Flu, Cold & Cough formula can very quickly stop the flu and cough in their initial stages, it is a good product to keep on hand to protect against the flu. The formula is also very strong in fighting flu and cough at their peak. After taking this formula, most people feel better the next day.

HERBALmax™ Flu, Cold & Cough formula is sold in bottles containing 60 capsules. Orders can be placed online at www.herbal-max.com or by phone at 310-234-9689. It is priced at $ 19.95. The HERBALmax™ line includes other specially formulated herbal products for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, liver, skin allergies, heart, acne, mood & fatigue, male impotence, menopause, and inflammation.

(PRWEB) October 20, 2004

Viruses hitchhike.

If you travel to any international airport you’ll notice the tighter security designed to reduce our risk from terrorists when we fly. But one of the greatest threats to our health doesn’t fly – it hitchhikes.

Many people think viruses like the common cold and influenza fly through the air then into your body through your mouth or nose. But most viruses don’t fly into your body – they hitchhike.

When you have a cold and you sneeze, all those droplets containing the cold virus travel through the air and land – often on items people touch frequently like doorknobs, desks or telephones. With a virus on your hands all you need to do is touch, scratch or rub your eyes or nose and the virus can enter your body.

In fact, over ninety percent of respiratory viruses get into your body when you touch your eyes and nose with your fingernails.

Cleaning your hands could be the key to avoiding the common cold and influenza. If you suffer from colds and flus on a regular basis remember this saying – “Where there’s soap there’s hope.”

Thoroughly wash and dry your hands every time you go to the toilet and any time you have hand to hand contact with others. Natural soap, alcohol rubs or the specially designed cleanzone soap are probably the best choices for hand washing.

And remember grandma’s advice: “Don’t touch your face with your hands.” The next time you go to rub your eyes or engage in an unmentionable activity with your nostrils remember viruses don’t fly into your body – they hitchhike.

Two Stock Picks for the Cold and Flu Season

SpeculatingStocks.com discusses two stock picks for this cold and flu season. SpeculatingStocks.com has picked hundreds of stock picks in the past and regularly comments on stock picks, penny stocks, hot stocks and small cap stocks on SpeculatingStocks.com and in their stock newsletter. Now, is the time to be looking at stocks again, particularly the cold and flu sector as the stock market begins to find a market bottom and investors research key, timely sectors.
MTXX is the developer and marketer of the Zicam cold and flu remedy brand with a distribution network that includes Wal-Mart, Walgreens, and CVS. SpeculatingStocks.com’s second stock pick for the cold and flu season, RAD (Rite Aid), a drugstore retail chain with prescription and over-the-counter medication for cold and flu and other ailments.

SpeculatingStocks.com Stock Pick: Matrixx Initiatives, Inc. (MTXX)
Stock Price: .77
Matrixx Initiatives, Inc. is engaged in the development and marketing of over-the-counter healthcare products that utilize the company’s drug delivery systems. Its wholly-owned subsidiary, Zicam, LLC, markets and sells Zicam® and Nasal Comfort(TM) products in the cough and cold category.

MTXX also offers Zicam Multi-Symptom Cold and Flu Relief products, which utilize a spoon dosing delivery to provide relief of cold and flu symptoms.
MTXX is a perennial cold and flu season stock play and well known for that fact. MTXX dropped the last four trading days creating a buying opportunity to play this year’s cold and flu season.
MTXX’s over-the-counter cold and flu products are sold at several large national retailers including Wal-Mart, Walgreens, and CVS. Zicam is one of the top three cough, cold and allergy growth brands and its multi-symptom cold and flu products account for 45% of the company’s retail sales growth.
MTXX has an attractive brand and sold distribution network in place. We believe MTXX will have another cold and flu season move.
SpeculatingStocks.com Stock Pick: Rite Aid Corporation (RAD)
Stock Price: .31
Rite Aid Corporation is a drugstore chain with more than 4,900 stores in 31 states and the District of Columbia. The company’s fiscal 2008 annual sales totaled more than .3 billion.
Rite Aid is a major brand that continues to expand. Patients fill their prescriptions at Rite Aid for various ailments and shop for over-the-counter medication for cold and flu and other illnesses.

RAD has been down significantly this year, but we see the potential for a major turn around in the future for RAD. Three independent proxy advisory firms have recommended RAD stockholders support RAD’s Board of Directors’ plan for a reverse split. The reverse stock split could be approved on December 2nd.
Reverse stock split is never a good phrase to investors, but in this case it looks like it must be done and we believe most of the negativity is already priced into RAD. After the reverse split, we expect investors to look at RAD in a new, refreshing light.
We believe RAD will receive major attention as a cold and flu season play over the next 1 – 2 months. Also, we expect RAD to begin its turn around.
At SpeculatingStocks.com, we believe it is important to find the right small cap stocks and penny stocks at the right time in their stock chart and business cycle. With MTXX and RAD, we believe we have found two stocks that have a great chance at becoming hot stocks in the short-term.
About SpeculatingStocks.com:

The Common Cold, Influenza and Aloeride

It’s that time of year again when doctors all over the world advise the elderly, the vulnerable and children populations to come to their surgeries to receive an influenza vaccination (flu jab). It is very important to get this in proportion because what have these three groups in common?

The elderly and the vulnerable have an immune system that is on the decline and thus they fail a robust defence against a virus (not just a flu virus). Children may not have fully developed an adequate immune system and they have the ‘endearing’ quality of sneezing into everybody’s faces without holding their hand in front of their mouth (common hygiene often can be a distant province) which helps to spread a virus.

Many people catch a cold and many call that flu, males reportedly make this error more readily than females. In a common cold you don’t get fever or a headache, but you do get a stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat and possibly mild chest discomfort. Any (mostly mild) aches, fatigue and weakness reflect no more than that there is a temporary drain on your immune resources.

When you get flu there is no room for negotiation, there is no confusion. You will be pole axed with a high fever for several days that often is accompanied by a headache (watch out for dehydration), significant aches and pains, and fatigue and weakness. For those without a robust immune system, influenza can indeed be critical. Lest you forget, between 1918 and 1919 a flu pandemic killed 70 million people, thus it claimed more lives than four gruesome years of the First World War did.

Many scientists postulate that years of deprivation due to a world war drained many people’s immune system, add to this the physical spreading of a virus by homecoming troops and you have a recipe for disaster. That particular viral strain overwhelmed the body’s natural defences so quickly that the usual cause of death in influenza patients – a secondary infection of lethal pneumonia – was often not present. Instead, that particular virus caused an uncontrollable haemorrhaging that filled the lungs, and patients would drown in their own body fluids. Upon that terrifying episode much of the present drive for vaccination is based. But, as vaccinations do have their side effects and complications, would it not be wiser to consider an effective natural approach first?

What makes the difference between you getting influenza or not in the first place is how robust your immune system is. What makes the difference between you getting over influenza or not is how (rapidly) your immune response develops. This was the issue in 1918 and will be the issue always when it comes to viral exposure. So how robust are you?

And herein lies the problem, unless you are challenged you do not know on which rung of the ladder you stand. Many of my patients do not realise their true level of fitness until my clinic ergonometer bike challenges them: bottom rungs. From the above you will realise that bottom rungs in respect of viral exposure can result in disastrous clinical outcomes. What simple steps can you take to improve the robustness of your immune system?

First of all get reasonably fit, you will achieve this effortlessly by brisk walking in the open air for 30 minutes 3x a week. Go to bed shortly after 10pm and clock up some quality sleep. Next let good daily nutrition fuel the stoves of your immune system: freshly made raw vegetables + fruits + berries + grapes juices or smoothies, 2 immune system modulating Aloeride® capsules and 2,000mg of good quality vitamin C (made from rosehips for instance) to raise the antioxidant (redox) potential of your first line of defence – your bloodstream. You will be amazed how much a little can do. Sure enough Nature’s pharmacy has much more to offer but nine out of ten these 3 basic steps will suffice.

All viruses cause opportunistic infections. Fortunately you have the choice to slam that door shut on becoming their next opportunity.

Cold and Flu -causes, Symptoms, Treatment

What is Cold and Flu

Is it a cold or the flu? While a common cold, including chest cold and head cold, can be caused by more than 200 viruses, seasonal flu is caused by either influenza A or B viruses. Cold and flu remedies can usually ease symptoms. Antiviral medications like Relenza or Tamiflu are helpful if prescribed soon after flu symptoms start.Influenza (commonly known as the flu) and colds are among the most common infections of the respiratory system. People often confuse the two, calling a bad cold the “flu,” or vice versa.

Typically, the flu (also known as influenza) has symptoms that make a child feel worse than symptoms associated with a common cold, but it’s not always that easy to tell the difference between the two.

What are the causes of the flu?
Influenza viruses are divided into three types, designated A, B, and C. Influenza types A and B are responsible for epidemics of respiratory illness that occur almost every winter and are often associated with increased rates of hospitalization and death. Influenza type C differs from types A and B in some important ways.

The truth is, the flu and the common cold are caused by viruses. People get sick more often in the winter because they are exposed to each other more in the winter than in the summer. When it is cold outside, people tend to stay inside and are more likely to spread germs to one another.

The flu is caused by three types (strains) of viruses — influenza A, B and C. Type A is responsible for the deadly influenza pandemics (worldwide epidemics) that strike every 10 to 40 years. Type B can lead to smaller, more localized outbreaks. And either types A or B can cause the flu that circulates almost every winter. Type C has never been connected with a large epidemic.

Symptoms of Cold and Flu
Viral pharyngitis may develop gradually. It is often accompanied by the flu or a cold, and body aches. If a fever is present, it will generally be in the range of 101 degrees F or below. With cold symptoms, your nose teems with watery nasal secretions for the first few days. Later, these become thicker and darker. Dark mucus is natural and does not usually mean you have developed a bacterial infection, such as a sinus infection.

Recognizing the symptoms of the common cold is important for a few reasons. If you realize what symptoms are bothering you the most, you will know which medications will help relieve them.

Introduction to cold, flu, and allergy treatments
Every year, millions of people use over-the-counter (OTC) products to relieve nasal stuffiness and congestion, sneezing, runny noses, sore throat, and cough. The common causes of these symptoms include the viruses that cause the common cold, influenza virus, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), and sinus infections (sinusitis).

ince it is caused by a virus, antibiotics do not work against the common cold. These types of upper respiratory infections go away on their own and taking antibiotics will not help your child get better any faster and will likely not prevent secondary bacterial infections, such as an ear infection or sinus infection.

For thick phlegm, patients may try cough medications that contain guaifenesin (Robitussin, Scot-Tussin Expectorant), which loosens mucus. Patients should not suppress coughs that produce mucus and phlegm; it is important to expel this substance. To loosen phlegm, patients should drink plenty of fluids and use a humidifier or steamer.Take paracetamol to control fever, aches and pains (adults can use aspirin). Early use of antiviral medication may shorten the length and severity of illness. Consult a doctor to discuss treatment.

Two Stock Picks for the Cold and Flu Season

In this article, SpeculatingStocks.com discusses two stock picks for the 2008 – 2009 cold and flu season: MTXX and RAD. (MTXX) Stock Price: .77 Matrixx Initiatives, Inc. is engaged in the development and marketing of over-the-counter healthcare products that utilize the company’s drug delivery systems. SpeculatingStocks.com Stock Pick: Rite Aid Corporation (RAD) Stock Price: .31 Rite Aid Corporation is a drugstore chain with more than 4,900 stores in 31 states and the District of Columbia.
