Exercising Regularly can Help Avoid Seasonal Flu

Simply put, the easiest way to avoid the flu is to take precautionary measures. More specifically, an easy and practical way involves visiting the hospital for your seasonal flu shot. Regardless of this, there are still many other excellent ways in which to take pre-emptive action against the flu; one of the most popular is through exercise.

Following a daily fitness routine can keep you out of the hospital and in to all the things that you love to do regularly (i.e. – sports, partying, etc…). As nasty as the flu virus is, it becomes ever more popular as the frost approaches, and as these cooler months draw near, it becomes increasingly difficult to get to the gym. Our muscles begin to tighten, and our bones slowly begin to ache. Once daylight savings hits, most individuals are already lacking in sleep and becoming greatly fatigued. In addition to all of this, a lack of vitamin D (sun) can be quite detrimental to your health!

Despite, it’s very important that as healthy human beings we remain active. There are plenty of ways to do so:

Intramurals (i.e. – hockey, skiing, etc…)

Weight-Lifting

Aerobics

Cardio (i.e. – Treadmills, Ellipticals,)

Snowmobiling

Dance

Sledding

Shockingly, one of the most intriguing forms of exercise for the 21st century happens to involve video games. More and more people are flocking to the stores to buy Wii Fit, and other such interactive consoles. Again, it’s strongly recommended to explore these new innovative ways to stay in shape. This is particularly true for people who don’t normally exercise or play sports; it can become increasingly difficult to stay fit without exercise.

Some people are even engaging in things like Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) to brush up on self-defense. Training for such activities requires rigorous workout regimens and long hours at the gym.

Having said that, remember to supplement your exercise routines with selective diets. Things like nutrition, diet, water, meditation (i.e. – yoga), and vitamin C will keep your body healthy and allow you to feel strong and alert throughout the cold season.

Poor Hygiene; Sleeplessness; Malnutrition – These are all traits of somebody who is regularly sick. Avoiding the flu really comes down to how well you take care of your mind and body – If you exercise and follow most of the suggestions above, you’re guaranteed preparedness.

Pick Your Price Flu Shots from PicMed

Pick Your Price Flu Shots from PicMed

Tulsa, OK (PRWEB) December 17, 2010

PicMed of Oklahoma is announcing a new “Pic Your Price” program for seasonal flu shots. From November 29th through December 31st, patients can visit any PicMed location and name their price for seasonal flu shots based on their budgetary limitations. This community service is in response to the difficult choices many Oklahomans face when choosing preventative medical care for their families.

Pic Med recognizes that the current economic climate has reduced the amount of discretionary spending for Oklahomans. In previous years, governmental health agencies provided flu vaccinations at little to no cost. This year, those agencies are charging for this service and other providers are often more expensive. For a family of 5, flu shots would run approximately $ 125.00; no small sum during these times and in the midst of the holidays. Many families are taking the gamble instead of getting the vaccination. PicMed wants to insure a healthy and happy holiday for all by offering flu vaccinations according to a patient’s budgetary limitations.

Vaccines are available for ages 6 months and up while supplies last.

Doctors Watching for Bird Flu Symptoms as Fears of Bird Flu Epidemic Increase; No Reliable Vaccine Currently Available

Doctors Watching for Bird Flu Symptoms as Fears of Bird Flu Epidemic Increase; No Reliable Vaccine Currently Available

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) October 5, 2005

Health organizations around the world are bracing for a possible epidemic that could cost many more lives than last year’s Asian Tsunami and last month’s U.S. hurricanes combined. According to David Nabarro of the U.N. and World Health Organization, a new bird flu epidemic could kill between 5 and 150 million people.

Bird flu, or avian flu, is an influenza virus strain that typically infects birds – including wild birds like ducks and domestic birds like chickens.

There are many forms of bird flu, and most are relatively harmless, producing mild symptoms or even no symptoms. However, several strains of bird flu produce a highly contagious disease that kills quickly and could lead to a massive bird flu epidemic. These dangerous viruses are known as “highly pathogenic avian influenza.” One such bird flu virus is currently spreading among chickens in Asian countries. In recent years it was discovered that the bird flu virus can infect people who have close contact with live birds. It is then possible for the virus to spread from human to human.

Symptoms of bird flu (avian flu) in humans include:

Conjunctivitis

Cough

Fever

Muscle aches

Sore throat

(Severe cases) Breathing problem and pneumonia

Bird flu can be fatal.

How dangerous is bird flu?

There have been a number of small outbreaks of bird flu since 1997, and people who get it appear to have a high mortality rate.

1997 Hong Kong – 18 people were infected and 6 people died. There were two cases and one death in Hong Kong in 2003. As many as 10 deaths have been linked to an outbreak in a number of Asian countries last year. A large scale outbreak, however, could cause millions of deaths around the world.

How can bird flu be treated?

Anyone with bird flu symptoms should see a health care professional immediately. The bird flu virus currently infecting birds in Asia that has caused human illness and death appears to be resistant to Tamiflu, according to officials at Queen Mary Hospital in Australia. Tamiflu is the most common drug used to treat flu in humans.

There currently is no vaccine to protect humans against the strain of bird flu virus that’s been detected in Asia. However, research studies to test a bird flu vaccine to protect humans began in April 2005.

Chinese Herbal Formula Helps Overcome Flu & Cough

Chinese Herbal Formula Helps Overcome Flu & Cough

(PRWEB) November 16, 2004

With flu season just around the corner, the award winning Chinese Herbal Pharmacologist, Doctor Lihua Zhang (http://www.herbal-max.com), announces the availability of an effective, maximum strength herbal product to combat Flu and Cough. It is appropriately called HERBALmax™ Flu, Cold & Cough formula. Clinical study has shown that 77% of persons who began taking the herbal formula soon after experiencing symptoms reported recovery by the next day. 89.5% of persons recovered within 1-4 days after taking the Flu, Cold & Cough formula. Because the herbs used in the formula are carefully selected from tens of thousands of Chinese herbs for its safety, it can be taken by all ages. Some herbs in the formula were used to stop the SARS outbreak in late 2002 and early 2003 in China.

The success of the formula is due to two factors:

1) Dr. Zhang’s extensive knowledge and formulation of the product backed by 23 years of herbal research and clinical success experiences; and

2) Concentrates of effective Chinese herbs known for their herbal antibacterial and antiviral ingredients focusing on the respiratory system.

HERBALmax™’ Flu, Cold & Cough formula has been shown in clinical studies to significantly shorten the duration of flu and cough. From September 2002 to April 2003, a series of 83 patients reporting symptoms of flu and cough were studied with results showing that the Flu, Cold & Cough formula appeared to aid recovery from flu and cough symptoms typically within 1 to 4 days.

Influenza (the flu) is characterized by the abrupt onset of upper respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough, headache, body aches and variable nasal symptoms. Fever typically lasts three to five days, but can persist up to a week or more. Cough symptoms often remain beyond the end of the acute illness. Sometimes, a post-viral cough may persist for up to eight weeks. Influenza – also is known to be a deadly disease that can disguise itself in variety of different forms. Flu and its complications commonly known as bronchitis and pneumonia was the seventh leading cause of death in the USA in 1999 and 2000. The flu and cough are respiratory illnesses caused by different viruses with similar symptoms. People 65+ years and children 6-23 months of age, pregnant women, and people with chronic medical conditions are at high risk of complications from influenza.

Antibiotics treat bacteria and are usually not effective for treating viruses like influenza and accompanying cough. Some of the drugs available for the flu only treat certain viruses, and each flu around is caused by different viruses. One such drug, Tamiflu (oseltamivir), can only be taken within 2 days of first signs of symptoms. It cannot be taken by infants less than one year old and may cause side effects. Last month, The Lancet, a British medical journal, published a study of children with influenza treated with oseltamivir and conducted by an international team of researchers. Results showed that nearly 20% of patients treated with the drug produced mutant drug-resistant viruses as soon as four days after treatment.

Because HERBALmax™ Flu, Cold & cough formula can very quickly stop the flu and cough at the beginning; it is a good product to keep on hand to protect against the flu. It is also very strong against the flu and cough at its peak. After taking this formula, most people would feel better on the next day.

HERBALmax™ Flu, Cold & Cough formula is sold in bottles containing 60 capsules at http://www.herbal-max.com or by phone at 310-234-9689, it is priced at $ 19.95. HERBALmax™ line includes other specially formulated herbal products for high blood pressure, liver, skin allergies, heart, acne, high cholesterol, mood & fatigue, male impotence, menopause, and inflammation.

Urgent Care Provider NextCare to Offer Flu Shots at Immediate Care Clinic Locations in Arizona, Colorado, Georgia and North Carolina for 2006 Flu Season

Urgent Care Provider NextCare to Offer Flu Shots at Immediate Care Clinic Locations in Arizona, Colorado, Georgia and North Carolina for 2006 Flu Season

Phoenix, Arizona (PRWEB) October 6, 2006

NextCare (http://www.nextcare.com/), a leading urgent care provider across the nation, will offer flu shot fairs in the Phoenix metro area this fall, administered by qualified medical staff. The flu shot fairs will be held at two NextCare immediate care clinics in the Valley and will feature flu shots for only $ 20 in a quick, convenient and healthy environment. NextCare will also begin administering flu shots at each of their Arizona, Colorado, Georgia and North Carolina locations in October.

Influenza (the flu) is a respiratory infection caused by viruses. The most common symptoms are chills, fever, headache, dry cough and/or muscle aches. Urgent care provider NextCare will be using the Fluvirin Influenza Virus Vaccine, which is for ages 4 and up. This particular flu vaccine does not give the flu, as it is made from killed viruses, yet can prevent it. It takes about 2 weeks for protection to develop after the flu shot, and the protection can last up to a year. The flu may be especially serious for the elderly and people with diabetes or heart/lung/kidney diseases. Children younger than 9 years of age getting a flu shot for the first time are encouraged to get 2 doses – given at least one month apart.

For those who receive a flu shot at one of the fairs, NextCare immediate care clinic will provide a free gift. Additionally, educational material about the flu and other vaccines will be available. The Thomas Clinic’s Educational Center in Phoenix, Arizona (1701 E. Thomas Road, A-104 Phoenix, AZ 85016) will host NextCare’s flu shot fair Thursday, October 26th through Friday, October 27th from 10:00am – 6:00pm and Saturday, October 28th through Sunday, October 29th from 10:00am – 4:00pm. The Power Clinic’s Educational Center (1606 N. Power Road, Suite 101 Mesa, AZ 85205) will host the NextCare flu shot fair Thursday, November 2nd through Friday, November 3rd from 10:00am – 6:00pm and Saturday, November 4th through Sunday, November 5th from 10:00am – 4:00pm. Walk-ins are welcome and no appointment is needed for the NextCare flu shot fairs.

Trusted Arizona immediate care clinic NextCare provides quality medical care throughout the year. Beyond the flu shot fairs that will be held in Arizona, beginning in October NextCare will be administering the influenza vaccine at its convenient clinic locations in Arizona, Colorado, North Carolina and Georgia. Patients may want to call ahead to confirm vaccines are available as NextCare does not know the exact date the vaccines will arrive or how long supplies will last. Those not at high risk of getting the flu are advised to wait until mid-October to receive the flu shot so it will prevent sickness through the sick season and not wear off.

Roche Announces Tamiflu

Roche Announces Tamiflu® Antiviral Flu Medication in Ample Supply for 2008-2009 Flu Season

Nutley, NJ (PRWEB) September 23, 2008

Roche announced today that ample supplies of its prescription antiviral medication Tamiflu® (oseltamivir phosphate) will be widely available throughout the U.S. this flu season. Tamiflu, cited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as an important second line of defense against flu, is indicated for the treatment and prevention of influenza in adults and children one year and older.

To help ensure the medication gets to the pharmacies and people who need it, Roche coordinates a rapid response system with distributors nationwide. Through the program, pharmacists can order additional Tamiflu through a toll-free number (1-800-526-0625) and have it delivered within 24 hours by a local distributor.

“We understand that pharmacists do their best to stock appropriate amounts of antiviral medications, such as Tamiflu, for use during flu season,” said Dominick Iacuzio, Ph.D, medical

director at Roche. “However, the incidence and severity of seasonal flu remains unpredictable

from year to year, and some pharmacies still may be faced with greater-than-expected demand during the season.”

Roche also created an early signaling system called FluSTAR® and advises pharmacies when flu may be spreading in their local area.

Antiviral medications, such as Tamiflu, are one of three steps (along with vaccination and good hygiene) outlined in the CDC’s “Take 3″ influenza initiative. Available in a capsule and liquid suspension form, Tamiflu is the only oral antiviral medication recommended by the CDC for influenza treatment and prevention during the 2008-2009 flu season. Unlike the vaccine, which is reformulated each year to work against three specific strains of the virus, Tamiflu is designed to be active against all clinically relevant influenza virus strains.

“Because Tamiflu prevents the influenza virus from spreading inside the body, it has to be given within the first 48 hours of flu symptoms in order to be effective,” said Iacuzio. “People need to be aware of typical flu symptoms, and call the doctor quickly as soon as symptoms arise, for proper diagnosis.”

While not a substitute for vaccination, prescription antiviral drugs are an important adjunct, offering a second line of defense in preventing and treating seasonal influenza.

Flu Treatment:

If a person does contract the virus, antiviral medications are available by prescription to treat the flu. According to the CDC, “for treatment, influenza antiviral drugs should be started within two days after becoming sick and taken for five days.” Tamiflu can reduce flu symptoms and shorten the time of sickness.

Flu Prevention:

Antiviral medications such as Tamiflu can also be given prophylactically to people who have been exposed to influenza to help contain the spread in certain settings, such as family members passing the virus to one another in a household. Preventive doses of Tamiflu following exposure to the flu can also be considered for controlling outbreaks in closed or semi-closed settings, such as nursing homes or dormitories. Clinical trials indicate that Tamiflu is up to 92 percent effective in preventing flu in adults – and 82 percent effective in preventing flu in children – when taken within 48 hours of exposure.

About Tamiflu:

Tamiflu, co-developed by Gilead Sciences, Inc., based in Foster City, CA, is indicated for the treatment of uncomplicated influenza caused by viruses types A and B in patients one year and older who have had flu symptoms for no more than two days. Tamiflu is also indicated for the prevention of influenza in patients one year and older. Tamiflu is not a substitute for annual early vaccination as recommended by the CDC. Prescribers should consider available information on influenza drug susceptibility patterns and treatment effects when deciding whether to use Tamiflu.

In post-marketing experience, rare cases of anaphylaxis and serious skin reactions have been reported. There have been post-marketing reports (mostly from Japan) of self-injury and delirium with the use of Tamiflu in patients with influenza. The reports were primarily among children. The relative contribution of the drug to these events is not known. Patients with influenza should be closely monitored for signs of abnormal behavior throughout the treatment period.

The most frequently reported adverse events in clinical studies were nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Tamiflu is available for the treatment of influenza in more than 80 countries worldwide. Prescribing information for Tamiflu is available at http://www.rocheusa.com/products/tamiflu.

About Roche:

Hoffmann-La Roche Inc. (Roche), in Nutley, N.J., is the U.S. pharmaceuticals headquarters of the Roche Group, a leading, global healthcare company. For more than 100 years, Roche has been developing innovative products and services that address prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease.

For more information, visit http://www.rocheusa.com. Product and treatment information for U.S. healthcare professionals is available at http://www.RocheExchange.com. Prescribing information for Tamiflu is available at http://www.rocheusa.com/products/tamiflu.

United States Government Ignoring Inexpensive Weapons Against Bird Flu, Says Author

United States Government Ignoring Inexpensive Weapons Against Bird Flu, Says Author

Ballwin, MO (PRWEB) May 10, 2006

The United States Homeland Security Council in early May 2006 released a 233 page report called the Strategy for Pandemic Influenza Implementation Plan. This report fails to mention any role for alternative medicine, although research shows that many substances could help people improve the functioning of their immune systems.

The United States government recently announced the awarding of contracts totally over $ 1 billion to five different companies to develop a bird flu vaccine. However, there’s no indication that it plans to spend money on Vitamin C, selenium or curcumin.

“It’s ridiculous,” says Richard Stooker, author of How to Protect Yourself and Your Family From Bird Flu. “I’m in favor of developing useful vaccines and improving the technology. But they say it’ll be at least six months after the beginning of a bird flu pandemic before they’ll have enough vaccine for all Americans. Why not spend some money on what could help everybody right now? It’s not as though mass quantities of Vitamin C would be anywhere near as expensive as Tamiflu.”

Vitamin C fights all infections by giving up its own electrons to nullify free radicals. It would therefore directly protect us from the effects of a bird flu infection. It would take massive quantities of Vitamin C to defeat bird flu, but medical professionals could easily give patients injections of Vitamin C.

Selenium is a powerful trace element that increases NK cell activity, is necessary for the production of the antioxidant glutathione, increases the T-cells, improves thymus gland functioning and stimulates phagocytes to destroy infections.

Curcumin acts as a natural protease inhibitor, which means it blocks viruses such as bird flu from entering our cells.

“All of these substances could be manufactured and distributed to everybody around the world at a small fraction of what they’re spending on Tamiflu,” says Richard Stooker, who’s also written many online articles about protecting your health against bird flu.

Richard Stooker researched the bird flu virus A/H5N1 and created a start to finish proprietary 7 Perimeter Immune Defense System that explains how to defeat bird flu at every stage. He also provides a list of the Super Immunity 7 herbs and supplements.

More information on how you can learn How to Protect Yourself and Your Family is available at the author’s website and blog.

Pandemic Planning Page Promotes Preparation, Not Panic

Pandemic Planning Page Promotes Preparation, Not Panic

Milford, NJ (PRWEB) May 10, 2006

The broadcast of ABC’s Fatal Contact: Bird Flu in America, underlines the need to prepare now, in a methodical manner, said Jay Arancio, spokesman for Planforpandemic.com, an internet based, free Public Awareness Forum that discusses issues surrounding a possible Avian Flu pandemic. “We’re urging both our members and viewers to plan now to “shelter in place” during a Pandemic. Aside from the health issues, much of the panic that may occur is due to the fact that people will experience an interruption of the normal societal services, like food delivery, electricity and so forth.”, said Arancio. “The US Government recommends “social distancing” as the best way to avoid getting sick during a Pandemic. Sheltering in place means, rather than leaving your home for someplace else, you stock up with enough food and essential supplies for a prolonged stay at home. Though the government is currently recommending two weeks supplies, we are recommending many times more than that because an Avian flu pandemic is projected to last more than 120 days, or 4 months, at a minimum.”

Avian Flu (H5N1) is a deadly strain of influenza that is currently killing hundreds of millions of birds worldwide. It is expected to reach the United States by late Spring. Many experts fear that a mutation may occur in the near future that will allow H5N1 to also infect humans. This is what occurred during the 1918 flu pandemic and, if it occurs again, the potential death toll in the U.S. and worldwide could be staggering.

PlanforPandemic.com was formed to provide a free source of information and tools necessary to help people survive an Avian Flu Pandemic. Its free forums contain critical information about how to prepare for a flu pandemic, how much food and water to store and how long a pandemic may last. The latest news and information on the status of the Avian Flu is gathered and posted from reliable sources worldwide and discussion boards to answer questions are available to all users.

A wide variety of other topics relating to the issues surrounding an Avian Flu Pandemic are available and visitors to the site are encouraged to both share and request information as needed. Anyone who wishes to learn more about the Avian Flu and the current threat that it represents to their health and the health of their loved ones should visit http://www.planforpandemic.com.

(PRWEB) January 3, 2005

A Flu vaccine shortage has been in the news for some time now. If you are one of the millions of Americans not among the “high risk” population receiving the flu vaccine or finding yourself without medical insurance TensionHeadacheMedication.com offers an alternative.

If taken within 48 hours of the onset of flu symptoms Tamiflu attacks the flu virus and stops it from spreading inside the body. Tamiflu is also used to reduce the chance of getting the flu in people age 13 and older who have a higher chance of getting the flu because they spend time with someone who has the flu. Tamiflu can also reduce the chance of getting the flu if there is a flu outbreak in the community.

Visit Tamiflu.com for more information on Tamiflu and for information on how to differentiate between the symptoms of the flu and a cold. The website also offers a desktop “Flu Tracker”.

Amoxicillin and Zithromax Z-Paks are commonly prescribed bacterial infection prescription drugs. These bacterial antibiotics are not useful against viral infections such as the flu.
